My 64 year old wife on dialysis for 5 months. She was not urinating at start she is now urinating 4 times daily. Does this mean anything.
Hello,

The implications of urine on dialysis depends on how she arrived at dialysis; in other words, was this following a prolonged episode of chronic kidney disease (over years) or did she reach dialysis after an acute decline in kidney function (over days to weeks)? If it is the latter - acute drop in function - then the return of urine may well be a sign of at least partial kidney recovery. If she had long-term chronic kidney disease, it is less promising. The true sign of recovery would be a fall in the pre-dialysis creatinine levels in the blood. All this being said, urine on dialysis does represent some underlying kidney function and this has positive implications for one's prognosis on dialysis even the patient remains dependant on dialysis.
