I’m a 45 year old woman with Stage 3 PKD, diagnosed a few months ago and still figuring out my diet.  I’m coming down with a cold or flu and am wondering what is safe for me to take for it.  Vicks Nyquil? Tylenol products?  Other over the counter pain meds?  I don’t think I’m allowed to have Chicken Noodle Soup now. Your advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Is there somewhere I can get information on how having Kidney Disease impacts other minor illnesses/conditions (and taking medication for them)?  Such as colds, flu, diahhrea, upset stomach, headache/migraine.

Thank you.

Hello,

Stage 3 is a wide range of kidney function. It would help to know your absolute level. Having said, if you are closer to a stage 2 CKD, then there are no major medication restrictions. As a general rule of thumb, at all stages of CKD, acetaminophen is safe while drugs like Advil, Narrosyn, Alleve, Celebrex (the NSAID class), should be avoided. Short term use of most over the counter preparations (except for NSAIDs) would be considered quite safe within stage 3 CKD.
