I am really concerned.
I had a 24 hour urine done:
Creatinine 1.22mg
Creatinine 24hr ur 2.5g
Creat Clearance 108ml
Protein .2gm

I had a spot urine test the day before this test and it showed TRACE Protein
I also had another spot test done the week before and it was negative.

All other labs are normal except for BUN at 27 and 29 in 2 tests

I am a 46 year old white male. How concerned should I be?

Hello,

It would be helpful if you wrote out the test results exactly as they appear on the lab sheet including the units. But if I do understand correctly, the 0.2g of protein is for the 24 hr period - meaning the total quantity was 0.2g and not 0.2g/L. In any event, it would appear you have a very small amount of protein in the urine. Based on this, I would definitely not panic as the amount is very small. It should be evaluated by your physician to determine its likely cause but the quantity appears very low based on what you indicated above. This would fit with the spot urine showing none to trace protein. Furthermore, BUN is not a desirable test to evaluate kidney function - creatinine or cystatin C are preferred if you have them.

Thank you. This all makes me feel better.
I am hoping the protein issue regresses.
Right now with all tests are normal except for BUN (27) and the trace protein.
Fingers crossed.
The ultrasound findings are very non-specific. The parenchymal changes suggest "something is up", as does the very minimal protein in the urine. By all means see what your physician thinks, but this does not sound ominous for the medium or even medium-long term assuming no worsening occurs.

RESULT:

Right Kidney:
-Renal length: 11.0 cm
-Parenchyma: Parenchyma echogenicity appears mildly increased.
Normal parenchymal thickness.
-Collecting system: No hydronephrosis.
-Calculus: No echogenic, shadowing calculus.
-Lesion: None.

Left Kidney:
-Renal length: 10.9 cm
-Parenchyma: Parenchyma echogenicity appears mildly increased.
Normal parenchymal thickness.
-Collecting system: No hydronephrosis.
-Calculus: No echogenic, shadowing calculus.
-Lesion: None.
I would expect that if you stopped, that the proteinuria would have a good chance to regress. If you copy and paste the wording in the U/S, I can get a better idea what it means. Please to not include any personal health or identifying information in the post.

If I stopped the roids would the proteinuria go away since it was only trace amounts?
The Kidney US only showed mild damage. The doctor said it was so minimal if their was no protein he would of considered the US normal.
Kidney disease very rarely causes pain - unless you had severe kidney inflammation or bleeding kidney cysts.

Anabolic steroids can cause protein in the urine as well as a host of other health problems. It is good you have stopped them. Assuming you have normal kidney function and the proteinuria does not progress and assuming you don't have another cause of kidney disease (you have provided only limited information), I would not think there is significant cause for concern about dialysis.

Please note, this forum is not intended to diagnose medical problems and instead is intended to provide general help about questions related to kidney disease. You should always discuss specific matters in detail with your health-care provider.

Another question I have is if I stop using anabolic steroids and discontinue all supplements (which is what the doctor thinks caused this) at this early stage can progression be haulted?
Will I be able to live a long life without dyalisis?

I am 46.

At what stage of kidney disease would you feel pain from kidney damage.

I have back pain but don’t know if from kidneys or farmers walk at gym.
No, 0.2 g/day or 200mg/day is not severe it all. Glad to provide you some relief.

Yes. You are correct with the .2g for the 24 hour period.
This is a huge relief as some publications have said .2g is severe and my doctor did not seem alarmed.
Thank you.
