Dietary management of hyperphosphatemia is a huge challenge for dialysis patients who need to follow a complicated and restrictive diet that is both high in protein and low in phosphorus. Most patients require the use of both dietary restriction and phosphate binders in order to achieve an adequate amount of protein to prevent malnutrition. As a renal dietitian, I am very concerned about limiting the access to non-calcium phosphate binders for our patients.
